Sources: Man United in late move to sign Rico Henry

Man United made late overtures over a potential deal for Brentford left-back Rico Henry in the summer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The Bees had been aware of growing interest in the defender, 26, during the main transfer window.

And top Premier League clubs, including Man United, are now interested in signing Henry and ready to step up that interest.

However, the Red Devils could not get a deal for the Brentford star over the line and instead signed Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon.

Reguilon, 26, joined United on a season-long loan deal on transfer deadline day (1 September).

It is believed Henry is on the fringes of the England squad with Luke Shaw currently out of action with a serious injury.

A well-placed source has revealed that the left-back is “definitely” in the plans of Gareth Southgate.

Henry has played every Premier League minute for Brentford so far in the 2023-24 campaign, but was missing from the squad for their League Cup win over Newport County.

The Birmingham-born ace has already racked up an assist for the Bees this term.

He notched two assists for the London club in the 2022-23 season in 39 appearances across all competitions.

Henry is under contract at the Brentford Community Stadium until June 2026.

The left-back has now made 202 total appearances for the club and was a key part of their promotion-winning side in 2021.

Man United star Shaw is on the sidelines with a serious muscle injury, while back-up Tyrell Malacia is also injured and missed the entirety of pre-season.

Both United and Brentford have won two of their opening four Premier League games this season.

In other news, Man United denied defender “surprise” £62,000-a-week deal.
