Sources: Brentford in talks to sign Tottenham star Djed Spence as Southampton medical begins

Brentford are in advanced talks to sign Tottenham defender Djed Spence, sources have told Football Insider.

The London club are hoping to fend off competition to sign the Spurs summer signing, 22, on a loan-to-buy deal.

Southampton, Crystal Palace and Brighton have also enquired about Spence as they look to bring in a new right-back before the window shuts next week.

But Southampton are expected to be out of the running as they finalise the capture of James Bree from Luton Town on a permanent deal.

Tottenham have given the green light to Spence going out on loan for the rest of the season if they complete the capture of Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon.

The Londoners are putting the finishing touches to a £40million deal for the defender as they look to complete their second signing of the week.

Tottenham have already signed Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal after sensationally hijacking Everton, in a move first revealed by Football Insider.

Spence is deemed surplus to requirements at Spurs by Antonio Conte, who has showed little trust or confidence in the player since his arrival from Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £20m last summer.

The right-back was outstanding on loan for Nottingham Forest during their promotion campaign and attracted interest from multiple Premier League clubs in the last window.

But he has had just 41 minutes of first-team action since his arrival, spread across six substitute appearances.

Conte has preferred to use Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal even though both players have also been available for transfer.
