Sources: Major update on Chelsea signing striker after Jackson twist

Chelsea are eyeing a striker signing ahead of the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed that Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino and his recruitment chiefs are on the hunt for a regular goalscorer after their struggles in the opening part of the 2023-24 campaign.

That search comes despite a twist in the fortunes of summer signing Nicolas Jackson – who scored a hattrick in the 4-1 win over Tottenham on Monday (6 November).

Jackson has been the leading forward option for Chelsea so far this term but had faced criticism for a series of high-profile misses.

The Senegal international, who was signed from Villarreal in the summer window, has managed six goals in 13 appearances across all competitions this term.

Christopher Nkunku was also signed in the summer to boost the Blues’ forward options but is yet to play a competitive fixture for his new club.

The France international picked up a serious injury in pre-season but is close to making a return to action and could feature soon after this month’s international break.

Chelsea had struggled for goals before Monday’s 4-1 win over nine-man Tottenham – scoring just 13 times in the 10 league games before that victory.

Raheem Sterling (four) and Cole Palmer (three) are the Blues’ second and third-highest goalscorers this term.

The last Chelsea player to score 20 league goals in a season was Diego Costa in the 2016-17 campaign as Antonio Conte’s side lifted the title.

Since then, stars like Alvaro Morata, Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner have failed to reach that level despite joining for big money.
