Agbonlahor can't believe Scott McTominay 'travesty' at Man United

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted it would have been a “travesty” if Man United sold Scott McTominay in the summer window.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 26-year-old is a “top player” and can force his way into Erik ten Hag’s plans this season.

McTominay has played just seven minutes of football in the new campaign after falling out of favour with Erik ten Hag.

The Scotland international was widely linked with several Premier League clubs throughout the summer window as Man United looked to move him on.

Fred was eventually sold to Galatasaray with Sofyan Amrabat joining the ranks from Fiorentina.

He is under contract at Old Trafford until June 2025 and has made 211 appearances for the Red Devils – scoring 19 goals and contributing five assists.

McTominay made 39 appearances across all competitions under Ten Hag last season, but just 15 of those outings came as part of the starting lineup.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It would’ve been a travesty if they sold McTominay.

“They need the numbers, they’re in the Champions League now.

“You’re going to get injuries, suspensions. Ten Hag needs the numbers.

“Fred had to go, he wasn’t good enough – but it was strange to see them try and push McTominay out the door.

“On his day, he’s a top player.

“He’s still at the club now so he’s just got to prove them wrong and play his way into this side.”
