Sources: Burnley move for Ian Maatsen collapses after Chelsea U-turn

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has U-turned on allowing Ian Maatsen to leave permanently this summer after his impressive pre-season displays, sources have told Football Insider.

The 21-year-old impressed on loan at Burnley in the 2022-23 campaign as they were promoted back to the Premier League.

As such, Maatsen was wanted by the Clarets on a permanent basis – but it is believed the Lancashire outfit have been priced out of that deal by Chelsea.

Vincent Kompany’s side have already seen a £15million bid rejected for Maatsen this summer.

His impressive performances at left-back, on the wing and in a playmaker role have changed Pochettino’s mind and may well have resurrected his Stamford Bridge career.

Maatsen turned out 42 times across all competitions for Burnley last term, notching four goals and six assists as they were promoted as champions.

The Netherlands Under-21 star has had a number of loan spells away from Chelsea since joining the Londoners in 2018.

He has also learned his craft at Coventry and Charlton in the EFL.

Maatsen has less than 12 months remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge.

The Dutchman has been a star man during Chelsea’s pre-season commitments in the United States and has earned the adulation of new boss Pochettino.

Speaking to club media (27 July), the Argentine said: “I am so happy with him. He is a player that can play in different positions. He has quality, he understands the game, and he is such a clever player.”

Chelsea start the 2023-24 campaign at home against Liverpool on Sunday (13 August).

In other news, midfield star “very close” to agreeing Chelsea deal.
