Sources: Arsenal now willing to let Jorginho go

Arsenal and Jorginho are ready to part ways when the midfielder’s contract ends at the end of this season, sources have told Football Insider.

The Gunners are in the market for a defensive midfielder ahead of the January window – and such a move could push the 31-year-old out at the Emirates Stadium.

Football Insider revealed last month (17 November) that Arsenal are set to push hard to try and get a deal over the line for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

It is believed a final decision on Jorginho’s future is set to be taken after the winter window slams shut, but all parties are currently leaning towards an exit.

The Italy international has never hidden his desire to return to his homeland and a well-placed source has told Football Insider that he will have plenty of takers in Serie A in the summer of 2024.

Sources say Jorginho was only ever seen as a stop-gap signing after he joined Arsenal in January on an 18-month deal.

The Gunners hold the option to extend his contract by a further 12 months but it is believed they are unlikely to do so.

He has made 16 appearances across all competitions this season, notching one goal.

The midfielder has started in eight of those outings and has worn the captain’s armband on multiple occasions.

Jorginho, who has made 50 appearances for Italy and won the European Championships in 2021, made 16 Arsenal appearances in the second half of the 2022-23 campaign.

He was signed from Chelsea for a reported fee of £12million earlier this year as the Gunners looked to beat eventual champions Man City to the Premier League title.

The ex-Napoli star earns a reported wage of £110,000-a-week at Arsenal.
