Nottingham Forest told to seal Maxwel Cornet deal as new £17.5m details emerge - pundit

Noel Whelan has urged Nottingham Forest to continue their promising summer business by signing “exciting” Burnley star Maxwel Cornet.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hinted that the 26-year-old’s Premier League experience would be “invaluable” for the promoted club’s survival this season.

According to the Daily Mail (25 July), Cornet is being chased by a number of clubs in England following Burnley’s relegation – including Forest, Everton, and Fulham.

The report claims the Clarets want any interested club to pay the Ivory Coast international’s £17.5million release clause in full.

Cornet, who is under contract at Turf Moor until 2026, scored nine goals in 26 outings last term.

He played as a striker, winger, and even at left-back during the 2021-22 campaign.

Whelan suggested the Forest fans “would love” to watch Cornet as they prepare for a “tough season” back in the top flight.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “They’ve gone for the right players so far.

“They have spent really well on players with that Premier League experience, and Cornet is another.

“He could be invaluable to Forest. He’s an exciting player as well – he’s very quick and can both assist and score.

“More importantly – he knows what this league is all about. It will be a bit of an eye-opener for some of these players, there’s no doubt about it.

“It will be a tough season. They did well in the FA Cup last season, but that will mean very much when the likes of Liverpool and Man City come to the City Ground.

“Cornet’s experience would be massive for Forest, and I think the fans would love watching him play too.”
