'Disgrace', 'Worst decision I've ever seen' - Celtic fans stunned as controversial Daizen Maeda footage analysed

Celtic fans have been left baffled by Daizen Maeda’s red card in their Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night (7 November).

The Japanese international was dismissed from play after a 23rd-minute challenge on Mario Hermoso when the Hoops were 1-0 down.

Brendan Rodgers’ side went on to face a heavy 6-0 defeat to the La Liga giants, putting their chances of qualifying for the knock-out rounds in jeopardy.

The boss was left “absolutely fuming” by the incident, especially considering Atletico star Pablo Barrios was not cautioned at all for a similar challenge on Kyogo Furuhashi just minutes later.

Celtic fans have taken to social media to call out the poor refereeing and claim that their side would have had a chance with 11 men.

One fan claimed the decision to send Maeda off was completely incorrect.

This fan was critical of the officials’ use of VAR and slammed them for using a slow-motion replay which made the challenge look worse than it did in reality.

One supporter was fuming over the red card and claimed the players should of been “all over” the ref after the controversy.

This fan claimed VAR overstepped its boundaries when they interfered with Maeda’s removal.

This fan claimed Maeda’s dismissal was the “turning point” of the tie but admitted that the Hoops were “outclassed”.

Another fan insisted that footage must be played at normal speed if VAR want to come to a fair verdict.

This fan called the entire incident “pathetic” and was shocked that the VAR officials would suggest a straight red.

This supporter claimed the call was “up there” with the worst decisions they’d ever seen.
