McAvennie excited about Celtic potentially appointing Lampard after source reveals new twist

Frank McAvennie would love it if Celtic switched their attention to Frank Lampard from Eddie Howe.

The former Celtic striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed that Lampard is his second choice for the vacant manager’s job at Parkhead now Howe’s move is in doubt.

This site first revealed last week that Howe was having second thoughts on taking over at Parkhead after reaching a verbal agreement with Celtic.

It is now understood that he is on a shortlist of three to replace Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace with Lampard also being considered for that role.

In February this site reported that Lampard would be open to taking the Celtic job if it was still vacant in the summer and McAvennie claims the potential move would be great for Scottish football after Steven Gerrard’s appointment and success at Rangers.

“I wouldn’t mind if Frank Lampard came up, I would love that,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It would be brilliant for Scottish football as well, Gerrard’s come up as a high profile individual and done wonders at Rangers.

“If Lampard could come up and stop Rangers winning the league next year that would be even better for Scottish football.

“What more can you add to on Old Firm than Gerrard v Lampard? It would be good fun. The English press would have a field day.”

Lampard, 42, was dismissed by Chelsea in late January after a string of disappointing results in the Premier League which left the club adrift of the Champions League places.

The Athletic reported that Lampard’s strained relationship with club director Marina Granovskaia and players complaining about a ‘lack of tactical instruction’ were key reasons behind his sacking.

In other news, Celtic are in talks to sign a striker this summer with a six-figure fee in line to be paid.
