Whelan delivers instant verdict as Celtic dressing room stance on Elyounoussi signing revealed

Mohamed Elyounoussi’s future at Celtic remains up in the air despite his recent form in front of goal.

That is the view of former Aberdeen and Leeds United striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the possibility of the Hoops signing the 26-year-old permanently this summer.

Elyounoussi scored a brace on Saturday as the Hoops warmed up for next weekend’s trip to Ibrox with a 6-0 thrashing of Livingston.

As quoted by the Glasgow Times, Bhoys defender Greg Taylor heaped praise on the Norwegian winger, on loan from Southampton, and revealed the dressing room would be “very happy” if he stayed.

Whelan claimed Elyounoussi’s future is reliant on the incoming manager at Celtic Park.

“Elyounoussi’s future will be very dependant on who comes in,” he told Football Insider.

“He will have to prove himself again to another manager and quite frankly, he might not be their style of player.

“This is the danger when you do not have a permanent manager in place. He will have to prove that he is worthy of a permanent move.

“It is certainly not a given that he will be there next season just because he has scored a few goals recently. Well done for scoring, but you would expect him to be banging a brace in every week.

“I still think Elyounoussi has a lot of work to do if he wants to get a permanent move to Celtic. I do not think it is justified because he scored two goals.”

Football Insider understands Southampton could make Elyounoussi available for as little as £5million this summer.

He has contributed 15 goals and six assists in 39 appearances during his second season-long loan spell at Parkhead.

In other news, a pundit is worried by a potentially ‘devastating’ Celtic player development pre-Rangers.
