Sources: Tottenham set sights on Chalobah signing after shattering news confirmed

Tottenham are interested in a January swoop for Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah following Micky van de Ven’s injury, sources have told Football Insider.

The Blues are assessing potential sellable assets ahead of the winter window and have identified Chalobah, 24, as a likely candidate.

It is believed Spurs, as well as German giants Bayern Munich, are interested in the defender.

It would be a shock move for Ange Postecoglou’s side, with goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini the last player to quit Chelsea for bitter rivals Tottenham in 2009.

The Blues are plotting January business of their own with a new first-choice shot-stopper and prolific striker among the top targets for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

But the Stamford Bridge club do not have much Financial Fair Play leeway following a heavy summer of spending, meaning they will have to sell to balance the books.

Tottenham are ready to throw their hat in the ring for Chalobah’s signature following the devastating injury to summer signing Micky van de Ven.

The Chelsea star has not played a single minute so far in the 2023-24 campaign with injury limiting his involvement.

Postecoglou has confirmed he is likely to be out until the new year – but the Australian was already keen to bring in another centre-back, and those plans will now be stepped up ahead of the January window.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (10 November) that Tottenham are also planning a new move for Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly after failing to land him during the summer window.

Both Kelly and Chalobah are on the shortlist for Spurs as they vie to maintain their good start to the 2023-24 campaign.

Postecoglou’s side will also be without Cristian Romero until December after his red card in the 4-1 loss against Chelsea earlier this week (6 November).
