Sources: Man United pull plug on signing David Datro Fofana after 18 scout reports rubbish him

Man United pulled the plug on potentially signing incoming Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana after compiling 18 scouting reports on him, sources have told Football Insider.

The forward, 20, will join the Londoners on 1 January after a deal was announced earlier this week.

United were also keeping close tabs on Fofana but opted not to pursue a deal even though they are in the market for a new centre-forward in the window that formally opens on Sunday.

It is believed from one well-placed source that United had a dossier of 18 scouting reports on Fofana but they deemed him “not good enough”.

Chelsea have agreed to pay Norwegian club Molde £8.7million for the Ivory Coast international.

He scored 15 goals in 24 Eliteserien games this season – including a run of seven strikes in seven games at the end of the campaign.

Fofana will offer Chelsea a fresh attacking option after Armando Broja was ruled out for the rest of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The Albania international’s injury means the Blues were left with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Kai Havertz as their only senior strikers.

Man United are in the market for a forward of their own after Cristiano Ronaldo left the club in acrimonious circumstances last month.

Sources told Football Insider on Wednesday (28 December) that Man United are working on a temporary forward signing and are willing to pay a £5million January loan fee to get the deal over the line.

Erik ten Hag’s side have seen success with long-serving duo Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in recent games but are keen to bolster their attack in order to qualify for the Champions League this term.

The Red Devils face relegation-threatened Wolves on Saturday (31 December).
