Sources: Major update on Chelsea-Abramovich mystery after £2.5bn seized

The £2.5billion generated by Roman Abramovich’s sale of Chelsea to Todd Boehly has still not been delivered to the victims of the war in Ukraine, Football Insider has learned.

Abramovich was effectively forced to sell the West London club following UK government sanctions relating to his association with Russian president and aggressor in the Ukrainian conflict Vladimir Putin.

The sale was allowed to go ahead in May under the proviso that the proceeds be donated to those affected by the war.

A foundation was established to distribute the funds but details of its operations remain opaque.

Football Insider reported in October that neither the charity nor the Foreign Office had many any progress in directing the cash towards Ukraine.

Using information from the Parliamentary archive service Hansard, this site can now reveal that, as of last Tuesday (20 December), the charity is still not in a position to fulfil its purpose in aiding the war-torn state.

The £2.5bn sale funds remain frozen in Abramovich’s company bank account, with senior MPS bewildered by the lack of action seven months on from Boehly’s takeover.

Abramovich was one of a cluster of Russian oligarchs, including former Everton benefactor Alisher Usmanov, to be sanctioned by the UK government in March.

News has emerged this week that Canada plans to seize a further $26m of assets from a company owned by the 56-year-old.

His successor at Stamford Bridge has wasted no time making his mark on the set-up behind the scenes, enacting a raft of sweeping changes in the sporting and business departments.
