Expert: Chelsea ‘stakeholders asking questions’ after Wesley Fofana update

The stakeholders at Chelsea will be wondering what the plan is for Wesley Fofana after the £70million summer signing suffered another injury setback over the winter break.

That is the view of finance guru Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest recovery timeline for the 22-year-old centre-back.

But the Frenchman has endured a terrible first season at Stamford Bridge, failing to work his way into the starting XI and then suffering a major knee injury in October.

The winter break looked like the perfect time for Fofana to return and build up some fitness, but he suffered another setback in a behind-closed-doors friendly, sending him right back to the treatment room.

Dinnery has outlined a return date for Fofana after his latest injury and insists that Chelsea stakeholders will so far be unimpressed by their summer investment.

“I don’t necessarily see that there’s been an issue with the fee that Chelsea spent on the centre-back,” Dinnery told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

“Of course, stakeholders will be asking questions with regard to a potential return to play.

“But it was a setback in a behind-closed-doors game – these can happen particularly after any long-term injuries.

“It’s just unfortunate that this has happened and we’re probably looking in the region of maybe three to potentially sort of four weeks on the sidelines – certainly within that month.

“So, it’s not massive in the grand scheme of things but it’s more of just a disappointment, really.”
