Ex-Premier League referee accuses Kieffer Moore of cheating as Bournemouth controversy analysed

Keith Hackett has accused Bournemouth star Kieffer Moore of trying to “deceive the referee” after his penalty claim during the loss against Crystal Palace on Saturday (31 December).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee insisted the 30-year-old “manufactured contact” in order to win a spot-kick.

As seen on BBC’s Match of the Day (56:41, 31 December), Moore went down in the 18-yard box under a challenge from Crystal Palace’s Cheick Doucoure – with the Cherries trailing 1-0 at home.

Referee Andre Marriner waved away vehement appeals from the Bournemouth players and his decision was upheld after a VAR check.

Bournemouth went on to lose 2-0 and dropped within just two points of the relegation zone after 17 games.

The south coast club are yet to receive a penalty since returning to the Premier League for the 2022-23 campaign.

Hackett told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “This has become part of football now.

“It has been brought about by refereeing in the past. There was contact, the players didn’t go down, and they didn’t get penalty kicks.

“But as a result of that now, these players are going down at the minimum amount of touch.

“It’s a manufactured contact, from the attacker.

“It’s trying to deceive the referee into thinking there is more meaningful and natural contact.”

Marriner has taken charge of six Premier League fixtures this season, awarding one penalty and 22 yellow cards.

Moore has notched four goals in 17 top-flight outings this term.
