Ex-Premier League referee: Tyrick Mitchell deserves extended ban as Crystal Palace controversy analysed

Keith Hackett has insisted the referee was “absolutely right” to give Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell a straight red card for his studs-up tackle on Kenny Tete.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee hailed Andy Madley’s “spot on” performance during the Eagles’ 3-0 home loss on Boxing Day.

As seen on the Amazon Prime Video Sport Twitter account (26 December), Mitchell was dismissed by referee Madley for catching Tete high on his leg after miscontrolling the ball.

Madley made up his mind quickly and his decision was upheld following a VAR review.

Mitchell, who has two caps for England, will now miss games against Bournemouth (31 December), Tottenham (4 January), and Southampton (7 January).

James Tomkins was also sent off during the loss after receiving two yellow cards and will miss the Cherries clash on New Year’s Eve.

Hackett told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I thought the referee was spot on.

“Andy Madley has come in as a relatively new official, and he’s done really well. I thought he was right for both red cards.

“Tomkins stopped the promising attack, and then his arm was up – he has to go.

“I thought Madley had a very good game and he got both of the big decisions absolutely right.”

Crystal Palace sit 11th in the Premier League following the loss, while Fulham are in eighth after their three-point haul.

The dismissal was the first of Mitchell’s professional career.
