Mills: Everton fans should be excited about Onyango after major reveal

Everton fans should be excited about Tyler Onyango but it may be a while before he makes his first-team breakthrough.

That is the view of ex-England international Danny Mills, whose son is the Everton academy, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the teenager.

The Athletic reported (October 26) Rafa Benitez is considering involving Onyango as they look to replace the injured Abdoulaye Doucoure.

His absence was keenly felt in last week’s 5-2 humiliation against Watford and will not return until after the November international break.

However, Onyango himself has only just returned from an ankle injury that saw him miss six months of football.

And therefore Mills has suggested he is not quite ready for a run in the Premier League.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Should Everton fans be excited? Yes. Is he ready for that step-up? I’m not sure.

“He’s only just come back from injury, he’s been out for a little bit. He came off in the last under-23s game against Burnley because I think he was a little bit tired. He’d played three games back-to-back in a short space of time so was suffering from a little bit of fatigue.

“At 18-years-old, coming back from injury, you’ve got to manage that very, very carefully.

“He’s 6ft 4in, a strong and powerful player. A good midfield player who can play that holding role and can go box-to-box.

“Everton fans should be excited. He looks like a really good prospect and has a lot of talent. Physically, in terms of stature, he’s there. Is he ready for the demands of the Premier League? He might have to wait a little bit.

“You can’t just throw a young kid into the first-team when he’s been out for a while.

“Yes, he’s had some good performances for the under-23s and it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s in and around the first-team but I don’t think that will be just yet.”

In other news, Kieran Maguire has revealed Farhad Moshiri is in an Everton boardroom ‘battle’ after an official announcement.
