Kieran Maguire: Moshiri in Everton boardroom 'battle' after official announcement

Everton chiefs are vying for a seat at the top table in European football – but they may be fighting a losing battle.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Toffees’ place in the continental corridors of power.

FIFPRO and European Leagues announced on 27 October that they will spearhead a joint initiative to bring about reform in football governance.

The two organisations want a greater say in deciding the future of the game and a more meritocratic qualification system for the Champions League.

Europe’s premier competition is set for a makeover in 2024 after which spots will be handed to certain teams based on historic performance.

Everton’s ambition since they were taken over by Farhad Moshiri in 2017 has been to smash the glass ceiling in the Premier League.

But Maguire claims that they are not yet a powerful voice when it comes to matters of football governance.

“They are not at the top table,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“Moshiri is battling to get his voice heard but the established clubs have more of a say.

“We see that they have links and connections within these organisations. It’s a difficult group to break into, the upper echelons.

“There is no doubt that Aleksander Ceferin is keen to look after the clubs of the 55 nations that form Uefa.

“But against that is the power of the franchise clubs, who are trying to protect their own interests.”
