Everton tipped to axe Keane for Wolves clash after 'horror' reveal - pundit

Noel Whelan has lamented the “woeful” defensive efforts of Everton in the closing stages of their 5-2 defeat against Watford on Saturday.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the “horror show” defending from the likes of Michael Keane was not Premier League standard.

Everton capitulated after taking a 2-1 lead during the match at Goodison Park, conceding four goals in 15 minutes – two of which came from set-pieces.

Watford’s five-goal haul means Rafa Benitez’s side have now conceded the third-most set play goals with five, with only Aston Villa and Crystal Palace holding worse records (WhoScored).

Whelan insisted Benitez could be forced into a defensive shake-up with “certain people” needing to “step up their game”.

“Everyone can be dropped if they’re not performing – no one is immune,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“It’s not like Everton don’t have any spare centre-halves to come in for Keane.

“Certain people at the club need to step up their game. No-one is indispensable and there’s international competition all over the pitch.

“They need to sort something out because that was a very un-Everton performance, they totally capitulated.

“They looked all over the place at the back, not even getting close to Josh King.

“The defending was woeful in that last part of the game. They’ll look back at it and it will look like a horror show.

“They are goals that you wouldn’t expect international-quality defenders like Michael Keane to give up. Perhaps not even goals you would expect to see in the Premier League.”

Everton sit eighth in the Premier League table after losing their last two matches.

The Toffees face Wolves next Monday in a bid to return to winning ways.
