Pundit claims Benitez 'is thinking about' Newcastle return amid incredible twist

Everton boss Rafael Benitez will ignore the voice in his head that is telling him to take the Newcastle job.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Toon’s continued manager hunt.

A Newcastle source told this site on 26 October that there remains a glimmer of hope that they can prise Benitez away from the Toffees.

Newcastle have been searching for a new manager since parting ways with Steve Bruce on 20 October.

Benitez previously managed the Toon under their former owner Mike Ashley and remains hugely popular with the fans.

McAvennie claims the Spaniard will have a voice in his head telling him to return to St James’ Park but predicted that voice will be ignored.

“There will be a voice in his head thinking about it,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“But I don’t think he will. Rafa had to swallow a lot of pride to take that Everton job.

“If he walks away it is like he failed. He won’t want that on his record.

“The fans want Rafa, I get that. He did wonders for them and he is that manager who will attract signings.

“I just don’t see it. There are jokes about him trying to be sacked after that awful result against Watford.

“Equally, I don’t think Everton want to look like they made a mistake so they will keep him.

“This should be the start of a new era for Newcastle and getting Benitez back is a bit like hanging onto the past.

“I think new blood is needed at this point.”
