Everton tipped to beat Newcastle to 'perfect' signing after Lingard update - pundit

Paul Robinson has tipped Everton to win the race to sign Man United attacker Jesse Lingard next year.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one suggested a move is likely because of Everton’s style of play and proximity to Manchester.

Lingard, 28, opted to stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer in a bid to regain his place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

The attacking midfielder has made seven appearances across all competitions but is yet to start a Premier League or Champions League fixture.

A recruitment source told Football Insider (October 23rd) that the Toffees are currently leading the race to sign Lingard.

It is understood that there is also interest from West Ham and Newacstle United.

Lingard has just over six months remaining on his contract at the London Stadium.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Lingard potentially moving to Goodison Park, Robinson said:

“It is a move that would work both in a footballing and a logistical sense. First and foremost, he wouldn’t have to move from Manchester.

“In regards to the football side of things he would fit in perfectly at Everton. Benitez played with a three in behind [Salomon] Rondon on Saturday. Imagine Lingard in behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin. I think that would be be a great signing.

“It would be a good deal for all parties involved. Everton are at the same level as West Ham, where Jesse was last year. I’m sure he would enjoy playing his football there.”
