Kieran Maguire reveals 'huge' £32m issue as Rangers set for payout
Rangers are set for a record payout of broadcasting revenue but there is still a ‘huge issue’ with the SPFL’s income.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the underwhelming broadcast income in Scottish football.
The Scottish Professional Football League posted their updated 2022/23 accounts via Companies House this month, revealing a turnover of £42.6million.
It marked a £3million increase from the year prior, but the majority of income continues to come from domestic broadcasters.
The SPFL received just £2.5million from overseas broadcasting rights, while the Premier League earned £1.1billion.
Of the £42.6million turnover, the SPFL is set to distribute just under £32million to teams across their four tiers.
As revealed by Football Insider, the turnover of the SPFL means Rangers are set for a record-breaking broadcast payout.
However, Maguire believes the underwhelming broadcast figures will be a frustration to Rangers and their rivals Celtic.
“I think the huge issue with the SPFL deal is that it’s £42million and that compares to around about £3billion in the Premier League,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“Celtic and Rangers fans feel that the SPFL deal is undervalued.
“But having spoken to both domestic and overseas broadcasters, their response is that Scottish football is dominated by two clubs and so there are not enough competitive games to attract an audience.
“If you look at Scandinavian broadcasters, for example, they just want rights to the Premier League.
“That’s why the value of the SPFL in overseas broadcasting is less than £3million.
“If you’re in America, Nigeria or Malaysia and you have the choice between the Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga and then Scotland – what do you think they will watch?
“So it is a frustration for both Celtic and Rangers.“
