Sources: Newcastle United told £40m Cherki offer will be accepted

Lyon are likely to demand £30-40million for Newcastle United target Rayan Cherki in 2024, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (6 November) that the Magpies and Man United are keeping tabs on the 20-year-old.

A well-placed source revealed that both sides feel Cherki could be a shrewd signing and see him as a “potential star in the making”.

Sources have also told Football Insider (8 November) that long-term admirers Chelsea could enter the race for the Frenchman’s signature despite being well-stocked in attacking midfield.

Cherki will have just 12 months left to run on his contract in the next summer transfer window.

That window is when a move is most likely to happen, with Lyon unwilling to part with the youngster during a relegation battle.

If the club do drop to Ligue 2, they could well be forced to drop their £30-40million asking price even lower.

Les Gones currently sit bottom of the French top flight and are yet to win a game in the 2023-24 campaign.

Cherki has made 10 appearances totalling 578 minutes of action this season, notching one assist.

He has already racked up 112 appearances across all competitions for boyhood club Lyon, contributing 14 goals and 17 assists.

Cherki is also a regular feature for Thierry Henry’s France Under-21 side and has grabbed four goals and three assists in their last three qualifiers.

The 20-year-old sensation can play in attacking midfield as well as on both flanks.

Newcastle shifted focus somewhat to young talent in the most recent summer window, bringing in Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.
