Pundit: FA should 'bring the hammer down' on Aleksandar Mitrovic after Fulham 'implosion'

Aleksandar Mitrovic should be handed a minimum 10-match ban at Fulham for his ‘implosion’ against Man United.

That is the view of former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the Serbian’s red card at Old Trafford.

Mitrovic was sent down the Old Trafford tunnel last Sunday after pushing referee Chris Kavanagh as Fulham lost 3-1 in the FA Cup to United.

Mitrovic was one of three red cards in the game, with Willian sent off for handling the ball on his own goalline, while Cottagers manager Marco Silva was also handed his marching orders for verbally abusing officials.

As reported by The Guardian (20 March), the FA have warned that a standard ban would be “clearly insufficient” for Mitrovic after his outburst.

McManus believes the FA need to ‘bring the hammer down’ on Mitrovic and set a precedent for younger fans watching the sport.

There’s obviously been a lot of chat about this with rumours of a 10-game ban,” McManus told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

“There’s been a lot of talk about 10 or 15-game bans for Mitrovic and admittedly it’s not a great look for football with younger fans watching.

We can’t have players or fans thinking it is fine to put your hands on an official.

So I think they’re going to set an example of Mitrovic and bring the hammer down on him.

I think he’s going to get a 10-game suspension – I think they have to.

The governing bodies need to set a precedent as it cannot be accepted.

At the end of the day, it was an implosion by Mitrovic and he along with his manager are going to have to pay the price.
