Phillips suggests Leeds main man has rejected long-term contract
Kevin Phillips claims Leeds United may have offered Marcelo Bielsa a longer-term contract this summer.
The Sunderland icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider reacted to the latest on the Argentine’s future.
Yesterday, 12th August, it was announced that Bielsa had signed a new one-year deal with Leeds.
This mirrors last season, when he also signed a new one-year deal on the day before the season kicked off.
2021-22 will be his fourth season in charge of the Whites after achieving promotion from the Championship and keeping the club in the Premier League last season.
Bielsa’s refusal to commit to a long-term deal could be viewed as frustrating by some but Phillips inststs it shows how committed to the club he is.
“That’s Bielsa all over isn’t it?” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“He’s his own man and we’ve seen that. He has that stubbornness about him.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if Leeds offered him a two or three-year deal but he’s said no.
“He’s happy with that which is odd for managers. Most managers want that long contract so they can get a good fee if they are sacked.
“He’s a football man and he likes to do it year by year. I know the fans will be very happy they have him for another season.
“Let’s hope they continue that brand of exciting football this season.”
Leeds start their Premier League season with a trip to Old Trafford on Saturday.
The Whites will be looking to avenge their 6-2 loss at the same venue last season.
