Leicester City expected to green light James Maddison exit after source's Newcastle United update - pundit

Paul Robinson suspects Leicester City would be open to selling James Maddison to Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs and England number one suggested the 25-year-old will be “looking to leave” the King Power Stadium next year.

Maddison has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season.

Newcastle were interested in signing the attacking midfielder in the summer transfer window but were ultimately unsuccessful.

Sources have told Football Insider (24 September) that the Magpies are planning to submit a new bid for the Englishman in January.

Maddison’s contract at the King Power Stadium runs until the end of June 2024.

When asked for his assessment of the latest, Robinson told Football Insider: “Maddison has been brilliant this year.

“He is having his best season in my opinion. His best season in a team that is shot of confidence. Leicester have been really poor, awful in fact.

“Maddison has been head and shoulders about the rest of the team. He is still creating and playing. His energy is still there.

“The way Leicester are at the moment, with no funds going into the first team, he might be allowed to leave. Yes, you would have to pay a big price for him but if there was ever a time the club would sell it is next year.

“The player is probably looking to leave. Maddison is not a player who will want to be in a relegation scrap.”
