Sources: Liverpool line up Kalvin Phillips deal - his preference is clear

Liverpool are eyeing a potential January move for Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday (18 November) that West Ham have joined Newcastle in the race for the Man City midfielder.

Juventus of Serie A are also keen on Phillips, but while he hasn’t ruled out a move abroad – his preference is to remain in the English top flight.

Liverpool are also in the market for a defensive midfielder ahead of the January window and are long-term admirers of Phillips.

And while Man City won’t stand in the 27-year-old’s way in January, it is believed they could block him from joining the Merseysiders – who could challenge Pep Guardiola’s side for the Premier League title this season.

Either way, the ex-Leeds United midfielder will not be short of potential suitors when the transfer window opens on 1 January.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Phillips now realises his move to Man City will not work out – and is ready to play first-team football once again.

He has made eight appearances totalling just 215 minutes of action this season.

Phillips, who has managed to keep his England place despite his lack of club action, has played just 808 minutes of football in total since joining City.

The 27-year-old cost a reported fee of £45million last summer (2022) and signed a contract running until June 2028.

Liverpool are currently lining up with Alexis Mac Allister in an unfamiliar defensive midfield role after Jordan Henderson and Fabinho quit for the Saudi Pro League in the summer.

The Reds moved to add Wataru Endo to their ranks in the most recent window but he is yet to make a real impression at Anfield.
