Kieran Maguire: Liverpool set to avoid fee after game-changing development
Liverpool will avoid having to pay a large license fee based on the club’s overall revenue.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Premier League will oppose all plans for a revenue-based license fee.
The King’s Speech this month included the announcement of a new Independent Regulator for Football.
Following the announcement, Fair Game hailed it as a “historic moment for football” and called for a new license fee to be introduced by the regulator.
Fair Game CEO Niall Couper said: “A new license fee based on a percentage of revenue should be introduced and used in part to provide staffing support across the top seven divisions.”
Liverpool posted revenue of £594million in their latest 2021/22 accounts, meaning they would have to pay one of the most expensive license fees in the Premier League.
However, Maguire believes the regulator will not get enough support to introduce such a license fee.
“Now, it has been agreed, I don’t think the regulator will be looking for a set licence fee,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“When somebody’s successful, everybody wants a share of you.
“Part of the reason for the success of the Premier League overall has been clubs such as Liverpool.
“So, I don’t think that this proposal will gather much favour with the regulator.
“The Premier League has been opposed to the regulator since day one.
“It feels that other stakeholders in football such as fans are not well equipped to making decisions.
“Instead they prefer self-regulation because they believe that billionaires, hedge fund owners and private equity firms are far better at making decisions than people who just support clubs from cradle to grave.“
