Liverpool news: 'Big' Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz claim issued in 'nightmare' verdict - pundit

Alex McLeish has insisted Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz are a “defender’s nightmare” thanks to their ability to rotate in the Liverpool attack.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Reds’ “flexibility” up front has played a “big” role in their success this season.

Mane, Diaz and Mohamed Salah led the line in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Villareal on Wednesday night.

The Senegal international netted his 20th goal of the campaign, with Salah contributing the assist.

However, McLeish heralded the rotation between Mane and Diaz as a major factor in the Reds’ success.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Salah is more entrenched on the right-hand side but the other two can swap.

“Diaz and Mane can go through the centre and I’m sure that Klopp will still look at games very tactically.

“He’ll think: ‘This week I’m going to play Mane with Diaz through the middle.’

“That has been a big feature in rotating not only players from the bench but rotating positions. That’s why they’re so flexible and a defender’s nightmare.

“I just love Diaz. When he came on (v Everton), Mo Salah put the ball over the Everton defence and he did that scissor kick. The other one was the switch of play when he gave it the fancy touch with the backheel.

“That guy knows what he’s doing. He’s just such an exciting player. When he comes on, for me, he’s just the catalyst for Liverpool.

“He’s so exciting, running at people and finding space to get the ball and then run at them. It’s not easy to mark him because he’s so elusive.

“For me, Sadio Mane has been world-class over the years, along with Salah. These three can play anywhere along the front line.”
