Referees may be set to alter approach at Liverpool amid news from governing body - expert

Referees will alter their approach at Anfield due to the controversy during Everton’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday (24 April), according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker delivered his verdict after Everton were denied a penalty at Anfield for Joel Matip’s challenge on Anthony Gordon in the second half.

Sky Sports reported on Monday (25 April) Everton approached the PGMOL to ask for an explanation of the incident.

The Athletic reported the same day the FA want Frank Lampard to explain his post-match comments about referee Stuart Attwell.

Lampard suggested his side were denied a spot-kick because they were playing at Anfield and Liverpool would have got the decision had it taken place at the other end of the pitch.

“I don’t think there’s any point [in an explanation from the PGMOL],” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I can understand the frustrations from Lampard but it’s gone now. Referees that are listening will understand now that when you go to Liverpool you need to be fair.

“It happened with Man United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer where managers would complain about penalties they got. Then Man United didn’t get a penalty for months.

“The way it’s been blown up means that it will be fair now.”

With the scores level at the time of the challenge on Gordon, a penalty would have given Everton the golden opportunity

Goals from Andy Robertson and Divock Origi in the final half an hour left Everton third from bottom, two points behind Burnley in 17th with a game in hand.
