Sources: Luton Town open talks to sign Barnsley star Mads Andersen

Luton Town are in talks to sign Barnsley defender Mads Andersen, sources have told Football Insider.

Premier League new boys Luton are working under a tight budget in this summer’s transfer window and they see Andersen as a viable target with the player in the final year of his contract at Oakwell.

Barnsley are unlikely to be able to reject a sizeable offer for the 25-year-old this summer.

Andersen is regarded as one of the best central defenders in the EFL after catching the eye at Barnsley over the last couple of seasons following his arrival from FC Horsens in 2019.

The Dane was influential in helping Barnsley reach the League One play-off final last season and was named the club’s Player of the Season.

Andersen made 51 appearances for the club across all competitions throughout the 2022-23 season and was in the starting lineup for all of those outings.

The defender also netted two goals and offered up one assist in those appearances.

Andersen signed a contract extension with the League One side earlier this year keeping him at the club until next summer.

Luton currently have Tom Lockyer, Reece Burke and Dan Potts to choose from at centre-back, with captain Sonny Bradley’s contract set to expire this summer.

Last month (10 May), the Hatters confirmed the defender will be leaving following the expiration of his contract after five years with the club and helping them secure promotion to the English top flight.
