Revealed: Sunderland set for £12m boost after Championship deal agreed

Sunderland could see their broadcast revenue soar to £12million per season during the Championship’s new TV deal, Football Insider can reveal.

The English Football League agreed a new five-year broadcast deal with Sky Sports in May worth £935million.

The EFL held talks with multiple broadcasters before deciding to extend their partnership with Sky Sports for the next media cycle, starting from 2024/25.

The value of the deal marks a 50 per cent increase from the previous broadcast deal between the two parties.

Sky Sports will now broadcast over 1,000 of the EFL’s 1,891 games including 328 Championship matches.

According to the EFL’s distribution formula, the new broadcast deal will leave Championship clubs 46 per cent better off in terms of broadcast revenue.

The current TV deal sees Championship clubs earn between £7-£8million per season.

Each Championship club earns around £4.5million from the Premier League’s broadcast deal, £2.5million from the EFL’s TV deal and extra facility fees based on how many matches are shown per season.

The EFL’s new deal with Sky is also set to hand clubs facility fees based on the number of matches broadcast, although the figure is still yet to be decided.

Overall, Football Insider analysis predicts that Championship clubs will earn around £12million per season in broadcast revenue when the new deal comes into effect.

The broadcast revenue in the EFL still pales in comparison to the Premier League, where even the 20th-placed side earns over £100million from domestic and international TV deals.

Sunderland will hope to return to the top flight before the EFL’s new deal begins in 2024/25, but their broadcast revenue is set to increase regardless.
