Kalvin Phillips cited after source's £60m Newcastle signing reveal - Agbonlahor

Newcastle United should “bite Leicester City’s arm off” if they only want £60million for James Maddison, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker cited Kalvin Phillips’ £45million move from Leeds United to Man City in the summer as proof Maddison is worth £60million.

The 26-year-old is out of contract at Leicester in the summer of 2024 and he looks unlikely to agree a new deal.

Sources told Football Insider last week (9 December) that the Foxes have slapped a £60million price tag on the midfielder in a bid to price Newcastle out of a move.

This site revealed earlier this year (24 September) that Newcastle were preparing to launch another bid for Maddison in January after having a £40million offer knocked back in the summer.

It is understood that Tottenham are also monitoring his situation after an impressive first part of the season saw him recalled to the England squad.

Asked for his verdict on Maddison’s £60million price tag, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think that’s fair.

“Kalvin Phillips went for a similar price and he’s not an attacking player so I think it’s more than fair.

“Newcastle should bite their arms off at that fee because he’s worth every penny.

“He’s got 18 months left on his contract so I think £60million is the right price for Maddison.”

Maddison scored seven goals and provided four assists in 13 Premier League starts in the first part of the campaign.

He was part of the England squad at the World Cup but did not add to his solitary cap that he won back in November 2019.

In other news, Newcastle United are set to make a record £179million-plus announcement.
