Jonjo Shelvey: Newcastle star should get extended ban after Everton footage analysed - Ex-Fifa official

Jonjo Shelvey should have been sent off and slapped with an extended ban for a lunge on Anthony Gordon as Newcastle United beat Everton on Tuesday.

That’s according to ex-FIFA and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s late tackle.

Shelvey, 29, flew into the back of Gordon in the first half of Newcastle’s win on Tuesday (8 February).

The tackle prompted a furious response from some Everton players but Anthony Taylor only gave the midfielder a yellow card.

Hackett insists Shelvey’s challenge was “reckless” and admitted he has been left baffled by the failure to remove him from the field of play.

“There is no doubt that over a number of years, Jonjo Shelvey’s type of challenging is not compliant with the laws of the game,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I do hope the manager takes him aside and has a conversation about this.

“I don’t want to take the passion out of Shelvey but when a player lunges and he leaves the ground, he is out of control.

“He can’t stop, he can’t change direction and he’s moving at pace. That challenge was a red card offence.

“Make no mistake about it, he was lucky to get away with that. It doesn’t matter about the impact.

“You can actually miss the ball and player and get a red card, just because of the way you go into the tackle.

“He was lucky because I think he was a bit reckless there.”

Everton scored from the free-kick Shelvey gave away but Newcastle recovered to win 3-1.

As a result, the Magpies moved out of the relegation zone for the first time since early October.
