Kieran Trippier: Jamal Lascelles will be stripped of Newcastle captaincy imminently - pundit

Danny Mills has tipped Kieran Trippier to replace Jamaal Lascelles as Newcastle United captain.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Middlesbrough and England defender claimed Trippier’s presence has solidified the Newcastle backline.

The right-back scored his first goal for his new club in the 3-1 win over Everton at St. James’ Park on Tuesday night.

Fellow goalscorer Ryan Fraser told club media after the game his teammate is a “monster” who has had an “unbelievable” impact on the club both on and off the pitch.

Eddie Howe’s side have now won consecutive Premier League games for the first time this season and have climbed out of the relegation zone.

They are a point clear of third-from-bottom Norwich City and they have a game in hand over the Canaries.

“It wasn’t a pretty game by any means but Newcastle got the job done,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley after being asked for his verdict on the win over Everton.

“Trippier I thought was very, very good. Very solid and very sound with great composure.

“That spread across the back four at times. I think he’s a future captain of the football club, I can see not before too long.

“His set-piece delivery is exceptional too.”

Trippier has now played four times for Newcastle after his £12million January move from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.

Lascelles has played over 200 times for the northeast giants since he signed from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2014 and he was named captain two years later by Rafa Benitez.
