Newcastle United news: Pundit issues 'surprised' verdict on Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn

Frank McAvennie insists there is more to come from Newcastle with two of their January signings still yet to make an impact.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was surprised to see Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes on the bench when the Magpies faced Everton on Tuesday (8 February).

Newcastle beat the Toffees 3-1, pulling themselves out of the relegation zone though two of their new signings played next to no part.

Burn remained on the bench after Eddie Howe stated he had a toe issue in the buildup to the game.

Guimaraes did make it onto the pitch but only to replace the injured Joe Willock in the 90th minute.

As a result, McAvennie predicts Newcastle can only get stronger as they look to avoid the drop.

“I was surprised to see the new lads on the bench,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I know Burn had a bit of an injury and Guimaraes only arrived in the country a few days before but Newcastle paid good money for them.

“I thought they might just be thrown straight in. The good news is that Newcastle didn’t need them.

“It was the other players who did the job on the night. For me, that’s only a good thing.

“Everton are a good side and to beat them with two of what are probably Newcastle’s best players is massive.

“So these guys can come in against Aston Villa at the weekend and give them another boost.”

Newcastle face Villa at St James’ Park on Sunday (12 February).

A win would make it three victories in a row for the Magpies.
