Callum Wilson: Pundit issues 'big' verdict after BBC's Newcastle United update

Callum Wilson’s injury is a major worry for Newcastle United, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker delivered his verdict after Newcastle’s “massive” 3-1 win over Everton yesterday (8 February).

The Magpies had to rely on goals from Keiran Trippier and Ryan Fraser as well as an own goal to secure their third Premier League win of the season.

Eddie Howe confirmed on Monday (7 February), via BBC Sport, that Wilson had no return date but he hopes he will return before the end of the season.

The striker has been on the sidelines after suffering a calf injury against Newcastle United on 27 December 2021.

Before that, he had scored six Premier League goals in 15 appearances.

“This is a big worry,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I thought he would be back for more than a few games, to be honest.

“Chris Wood still hasn’t scored and doesn’t really look like scoring. It was a strange signing in the first place.

“Guimarães has been brought in too. It’s Ok being brought in for a lot of money but it sometimes takes a season to get going in the Premier League. Newcastle have not got a season.

“It was a massive win over Everton, that was a must-win game.

“But Wilson is definitely a worry. He’s a striker they need in their team.”

Wood, a £25million January signing from Burnley, is yet to find the net for his new club after making three appearances.

Guimarães made his debut for Newcastle from the bench in the 3-1 win over Everton at St. James’ Park.

In other news, Newcastle United are laying the groundwork to sign an ‘absolute beast’ regardless of relegation.
