Finance guru tells every Premier League club to copy Newcastle after 'brilliant' announcement

Newcastle United deserve immense credit for becoming a living wage employer – every Premier League club should look to follow suit.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Magpies announced the news last Sunday (6 February).

All Newcastle employees will receive a minimum hourly rate of £9.90 per hour, with the new pay structure effective immediately.

Co-owner Amanda Stavely wrote: “This is an important part of our people strategy as we work together to deliver our new vision.”

Plumley saluted the decision of the new owners and insisted that every other club in the top flight should look to their example.

“This is a brilliant thing to do,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Irrespective of any sideshow around ownership, I don’t understand why all Premier League clubs aren’t doing this. Some are moving in this direction.

“The likes of Luton Town in the Championship are doing it. If they can manage it, every Premier League club should be able to.

“It’s a really positive move. It’s great for the people that work there, great for the community.

“There’s a really good news story to get out of that. It’s about doing the right thing by your employees.”

Less than half of Premier League clubs currently pay the national living wage.

The Magpies’ total wage bill for 2019-20, the most recent financial year on record, was £106.8million.

In other news, Newcastle United could be haunted by “big gamble” after “terrible” Callum Wilson update.
