Everton news: Lampard will be furious with these six players after what he saw against Newcastle - former manager

Alex McLeish has suggested Frank Lampard will be furious he saw from his Everton defenders against Newcastle on Tuesday night.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland manager blasted the Toffees’ backline for being “all over the place” at St James’ Park.

Lampard saw his first Premier League game in charge of Everton end in a 3-1 defeat on Tyneside.

Strikes from Ryan Fraser and Kieran Trippier, coupled with an own goal from Mason Holgate, secured victory for the Magpies.

McLeish slammed the quality of defending from the Toffees and insisted alarm bells would be ringing for Lampard.

“They were all over the place,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“Despite getting the early lead, Newcastle really ran over them after that.

“You would this is a worry. There were signs at the weekend, new manager coming in, Frank has galvanised them a wee bit.

“Let’s give Newcastle credit for what they’ve done but Frank will be really puzzled as how to they went from the weekend to this one.

“He will certainly be very disappointed with the six defenders and their displays.”

Mason Holgate, Michael Keane, Yerry Mina, Seamus Coleman and Andros Townsend started in defensive roles.

Jarrad Branthwaite replaced Mina due to injury 35 minutes in.

Newcastle had 20 shots, nine on target, in comparison to Everton’s 11, three of which were goalbound.

The result leaves Lampard’s men sitting 16th, one point and one place over Newcastle with a game in hand.

The Toffees’ next game is at home to Leeds United at Goodison Park on Saturday.
