Sources: Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien undergoing Middlesbrough medical after deal agreed

Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien is undergoing a medical at Middlesbrough on Thursday (31 August) ahead of a loan move, sources have told Football Insider.

Boro are finalising a deal for O’Brien ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline.

The 24-year-old’s contract at the City Ground runs until 2025 after he joined from Huddersfield last summer for a reported fee of £10million.

O’Brien spent the late stages of last season on loan with MLS side DC United and made 19 appearances for the American club.

As revealed by Football Insider (10 March), DC United agreed to a break clause in the loan that allowed the former Huddersfield man to return to England in the summer instead of remaining in America until the end of their season in November.

The midfielder was forced to spend time away from Forest after being omitted from the club’s 25-man Premier League squad for the second half of the campaign meaning had he stayed in the Premier League he would have been unable to feature for the club.

O’Brien was left in limbo at the club after a January move to join Blackburn Rovers was blocked by the EFL after the required paperwork was not completed on time.

The centre-mid has made just 17 appearances for Forest since his arrival last year and scored one goal in those outings.

O’Brien has been included in the squad once this term and was an unused substitute in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal.

In other news, Bayern Munich could now blow Nottingham Forest away to sign star.
