Nottingham Forest news: Ex-Fifa official demands retrospective action as controversial Scott McKenna footage emerges
Arman Hovhannisyan may face retrospective action after his reaction to a disallowed goal scored by Nottingham Forest defender Scott McKenna in Scotland’s 2-0 win over Armenia in the Nations League last week (8 June).
That is the view of ex-Fifa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Hovhannisyan launched a water bottle toward an assistant referee.
McKenna thought he had scored his second goal of the game towards the end of the first half only for it to be ruled out by VAR.
VAR did not feel the need to intervene and Hackett has suggested Uefa may still feel a punishment is necessary.
“I thought initially it was the ball but now I know it’s a water bottle, he’s off,” he said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“In fairness, he can throw the water bottle much further than he can throw the ball.
“I don’t know why the VAR didn’t come in because it’s a red card offence. He may have thought it was only worthy of a yellow card because of the distance.
“He’s got the replays that we’ve seen and because it’s a bottle I’m agreeing with the commentators, he should have gone.
“The interesting thing here is don’t forget there’s a match delegate at the stadium and whether he might report that as an incident unseen by the match officials.
“If so, you can expect some action from Uefa.
“I can remember Arsene Wenger kicking the water bottles at Manchester United and getting dismissed. What is the difference? The only difference is distance but it’s like throwing an object at players, it can hit them or it can land next to them.”
In other news, Huddersfield Town may launch a legal challenge and demand the Nottingham Forest play-off final is replayed.
