Ex-Premier League referee issues 'huge' Huddersfield Town claim - 'It's a car crash'

The head of the PGMOL Mike Riley should visit Huddersfield Town to apologise for Jon Moss’ performance in their 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in last month’s (29 May) Championship play-off final.

That is the view of the former head of the organisation and ex-Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the lack of accountability in English refereeing.

The Daily Mail reported last week (1 June) that Huddersfield Town want an explanation for the PGMOL after they were denied two strong shouts for a penalty by Moss.

They feel most aggrieved that Moss was not told by VAR to go to the pitchside monitor to review a challenge on Lewis O’Brien.

“The first thing is this, the PGMOL have got to recognise that Moss made a complete hash of the decision,” Hackett told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.

“Mike Riley lives in Harrogate, I know it’s difficult, but he should be knocking on the door of Huddersfield and say you’re happy to have a meeting. At that point he’s not going to change the decision, the game is not going to change.

“This whole matter is symptomatic of a lack of common sense and communication from the PGMOL. I’m sure Riley was at Wembley, he had the opportunity then to speak to the chairman of the club if need be.

“There’s no admittance. There’s never any agreement that a referee is human and has made an error.

“All of this could have been diffused by saying ‘I’ve seen this, I can’t do too much about it because he’s now retired so I can’t issue a sanction but I’ll admit that’s an error’. It won’t satisfy Huddersifled fully.

“The game of football is subjective, it’s about opinions and occasionally the cars crash just like in the road. This was a car crash.

“It continues to be a car crash because it’s very difficult for Huddersfield Town. They will come under pressure from their fans saying ‘There’s an injustice what are you going to do about it?’ It’s cost them a huge amount of money.”
