Ex-Fifa official: Huddersfield Town may launch legal challenge and demand Nottingham Forest play-off final is replayed
Huddersfield Town may launch a legal challenge to try and get their play-off final 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest last month (29 May) to be replayed.
That is the view of ex-Fifa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Jon Moss’ controversial performance at Wembley.
The Daily Mail reported last week (1 June) that Huddersfield Town want an explanation for the PGMOL after they were denied two strong shouts for a penalty towards the end of the game.
In particular, it is claimed they were stunned by the fact Moss was not told to review a challenge on Lewis O’Brien that may have cost the Terriers £200million.
“The laws of the game support the referee because law five states the referee is the sole decision maker,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“We know he’s wrong. There have been incidents in the past where major errors have been made across the world and the game’s been replayed. There is a precedent.
“Arsenal against Sheffield United, which was slightly different, in an FA Cup game [in 1999]. When a player was injured, they threw the ball back and the Arsenal player went and scored unchallenged. Arsenal agreed to replay that game.
“It’s not going to happen with Nottingham Forest.
“Because of the huge amounts of money, you’re potentially going to get a legal challenge. That’s always a possibility.
“It always strikes me that before big games you want the two clubs to sign a document saying ‘We accept the outcome’. It’s such a huge sum of money, you’re looking at potentially £150million-£200million.
“I’m not the owner or a supporter of Huddersfield Town but I know fans and they have every right to feel there’s been an injustice.”
