Agbonlahor delivers two-word verdict on Aston Villa sacking Smith after key update

There is “zero chance” of Aston Villa sacking Dean Smith and replacing him with Steven Gerrard, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer called Smith “Mr Villa” and insisted he will remain as the club’s manager “for many years to come”.

Football Insider revealed last week the Midlands giants’ chief executive Christian Purslow has a “strong interest” in the Rangers boss ahead of the summer.

Smith’s future at his boyhood club is far from secure in the medium and long term despite their impressive campaign this season.

The 50-year-old guided Villa to nine wins in their first 15 Premier League games this season, including a 7-2 victory over reigning champions Liverpool.

However, there are sections of the Villa faithful have questioned his position in recent weeks with their over-reliance on Jack Grealish exposed.

But Agbonlahor is adamant he will remain in the Villa Park dugout for a long time.

“There’s more chance of me going to the moon than Dean Smith losing his job,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He’s Mr Villa. He’s done a great job this season.

“Steven Gerrard is doing a great job at Rangers so I don’t understand where that’s come from.

“There’s zero chance of it happening. Dean Smith will be Aston Villa manager for many years to come.”

Villa have won just twice in their last seven games with Grealish missing through a shin injury.

They are now 11th in the Premier League table with eight games left to play including the visit of league leaders Manchester City on Wednesday.
