Whelan claims Kamara's five-game Rangers ban twist 'beggars belief'

Noel Whelan has slammed Uefa for trying to hand Glen Kamara a five-game ban at Rangers.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the governing body had failed to stamp their authority on racism in football after suspending Slavia Prague’s Ondrej Kudela for 10 games.

As detailed by Kamara’s lawyer Aamer Anwar on Twitter, Uefa had initially handed Kamara a five-game ban for “assaulting another player” but it was reduced to three on appeal.

Meanwhile, Anwar stated that Uefa dealt out the “barest minimum” punishment to Kudela for his racist behaviour.

Whelan admitted he could not get his head around the decision to try and ban Kamara for half the time of Kudela.

Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “You’re talking about inconsistency of punishments throughout the season. This one is just bizarre.

“It’s so bizarre, so frustrating, so annoying and so wrong. I mean we can tick off the negatives here that Uefa have just thrown at us. It does beggar belief who is actually running and who is on these panels that come up with these ideas for punishments.

“They should come under criticism more than the players, I’ll be honest with you, for coming up with this ridiculous punishment for racism.

“They keep saying there’s no place for racism in football, there’s no place in the community for it. Well, you’ve just allowed it to happen.

“There’s a clear and present moment where you could have stamped your foot down as a big governing body.

“Here’s your first opportunity after all that we’re fighting for over the injustice on black lives and the inequality. They’ve just shown it once again that is still there.”
