Kieran Maguire drops 'worrying' Sheffield United verdict after £8m news

Sheffield United failing to pay promotion bonuses indicates that the owner is looking for an immediate exit route.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the ‘worrying’ financial position of the Blades.

According to the Daily Mail, Sheffield United players are still owed around £8million in promotion bonuses.

The bonuses are reportedly worth around £250,000 to £400,000 per player following their second-place finish in the Championship last season.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (10 August) that players have been promised that bonuses will be paid in full by the end of September.

United received their first instalment of Premier League broadcast money in July but still decided to delay payments to players.

Maguire admitted that the situation is ‘worrying’ as they prepare for their return to the top flight.

It is worrying that Sheffield United have failed to pay players their promotion bonuses,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

“It’s also further indication that the owner in charge appears to be very reluctant to extend any credit facilities to the club from his own personal wealth.

“He is looking for an exit route and he wants to make sure he extracts the maximum amount of money from the sale of the club.

“The downside of this is that it creates a negative mindset among players, staff and fans and this can then be reflected in terms of performances on the pitch.
