Sheffield United make move for Aston Villa star Archer - sources

Sheffield United have registered their interest in signing Aston Villa forward Cameron Archer, sources have told Football Insider.

The attacker, 21, could be the latest young gun to leave Villa as Football Insider revealed on Friday (11 August) that Aaron Ramsey is on the verge of joining Burnley.

The Midlands giants are willing to listen to offers for Archer, who is on the radar of multiple Premier League clubs.

He has flourished on loan in the Championship at Middlesbrough and Preston North End in the last two seasons, scoring 11 goals and supplying six assists from just 20 second-tier matches last term.

Archer penned a fresh five-year contract at Aston Villa last August but has struggled to make an impression for the Midlands giants since Unai Emery took over as manager.

Archer had a successful spell on loan at Preston in the second half of the 2021-22 campaign, where he scored seven goals in 20 Championship appearances.

His form at Preston earned Archer a call-up to England’s Under-21 set-up, and he has scored six goals in his first 11 appearances for Lee Carsley’s side – who won the Under-21 European Championships earlier this summer.

Former Villa boss Steven Gerrard confirmed the youngster would be given opportunities in the first team for the 2022-23 season – but he was given just 28 minutes of Premier League football prior to his sacking last October.

Aston Villa kick off their Premier League campaign on Saturday (12 August) when they host Newcastle at Villa Park.

The Midlands giants will play their first European football in over a decade in the upcoming campaign.
