Kenny tells Jokanovic to pull U-turn after Brewster confession at Sheffield United

Paddy Kenny has urged Slavisa Jokanovic to start playing Rhian Brewster solely as a centre-forward at Sheffield United this season.

The former Blades goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 21-year-old’s development and confidence will not be helped by operating in makeshift roles.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live, Brewster admitted he would play wherever he was told by his manager, having been utilised as a striker, a winger and a number 10.

As quoted by Yorkshire Live at his press conference, Jokanovic confessed the young forward needs to “open his mind” and “find the capacity to adapt to a different role”.

United also have the likes of Billy Sharp, Lys Mousset and Ole McBurnie as centre-forward options.

However, Kenny suggested handing Brewster game time out wide might hinder, rather than help, his growth.

“I think it’s difficult for him,” Kenny told Football Insider deputy editor Russell Edge.

“He’s had a difficult start to his career at Sheffield United. Being in and out of different positions doesn’t help.

“He’s obviously used to playing down the middle as a natural striker. He wants to be in the middle between the goal posts, in the six-yard box scoring goals.

“I think when you find that when he’s playing out on the right, does he go outside, does he cut inside? Out on the left, does he stay out wide or cut back inside?

“It’s difficult for him. All of a sudden you’re playing in different positions and your mind will be all over the shop. You won’t know what decisions to make. It is difficult, I do get that.”

Brewster has scored one goal in 38 appearances for the Blades to date.
