Sources: Man City have surprise plan to re-sign Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

Man City have a strong interest in re-signing Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed last week (17 November) that Arsenal are “hell-bent” on sealing a deal for the midfielder, 25, in the January transfer window.

City are also in the market for a central midfielder as the winter window approaches.

Sources told Football Insider on 17 November that Pep Guardiola’s side have a concrete interest in Al-Hilal star Ruben Neves.

It is believed both Neves and Luiz are on the shortlist at the Etihad Stadium.

City’s interest in the Brazil international comes as a shock after they allowed him to leave the club without playing a single minute in 2019.

The treble-winners inserted a buy-back clause in the reported £15million deal to bring him to Aston Villa, but it expired in 2021.

Luiz failed to acquire a work permit after joining City from Vasco de Gama in 2017 and subsequently spent the next two years out on loan at Girona.

He is now an established part of the Aston Villa lineup and has started every Premier League game this season.

The 25-year-old has notched six goals and two assists across 19 appearances in all competitions this season.

Luiz, who has racked up 152 total Premier League appearances, is under contract at Villa Park until June 2026.

The 10-cap Brazil international penned his last extension in October 2022.

Aston Villa sit fifth in the Premier League, just three points adrift of table-topping Man City.
