Kieran Maguire makes 'huge' Chelsea claim about 'deliberately ignoring FFP rules'

Chelsea have adopted a ‘high-risk’ strategy under Todd Boehly but that doesn’t mean they are ‘deliberately ignoring’ FFP rules.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that he does not agree with the claims of former Man City financial advisor Stefan Borson.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Borson has accused Chelsea of ‘deliberately ignoring’ the Premier League’s profit and sustainability guidelines.

The Blues have spent over £300million on new arrivals this summer after also spending heavily in the past two windows under Boehly.

Players have been signed on long-term contracts to spread the cost of transfer fees, but it leaves Chelsea in a difficult position once they return to Uefa competition.

Maguire explained that Chelsea would not deliberately break the rules knowing the possible punishment could be points deduction or being kicked out of a tournament.

Stefan Borson’s claims are interesting and he clearly spent a lot of time doing the calculations,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

But at the same time, there is a lot of heavy lifting in some of those numbers and a lot of assumptions, especially in terms of the wages of players coming into the club.

Ultimately we don’t know those figures but there is a narrative coming out from Chelsea that the players coming in are on lower basic salaries than those who have left.

Chelsea also have the advantage of having sold a very successful stream of academy players in Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fikayo Tomori etc.

They have brought in huge sums of money at effectively a zero accounting cost.

Chelsea will also be bullish with regards to the distortive effects of the freezing of Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea just over a year ago.

They will claim that it had an impact on transfer values.

“So there’s a lot of balls in play and while it is a very high-risk strategy taken by Chelsea, to say that they are deliberately trying to break the rules isn’t something I’d go along with.

Partly due to the fact that the sanctions from both Uefa and the Premier League could be points deductions or non-participation in tournaments.
